in a fair number of instances, i couldn't come up with ONE song, so i made a list. deal. :)
song you would like to play at your wedding:
i’d probably want to discuss it with the person i would be marrying, but whomever i should want to marry would want to have this song:
“when you give your love to me”, kevin gilbert
inspirational song:
depends on what i want to be inspired to do. ;)
“his eye is on the sparrow” (if god is your gig)
“grace”, jeff buckley (if you need to be inspired to live life like you’re going to die tomorrow)
“wish”, nin (if you need to be inspired to smash things)
sexiest song:
i don’t have one, again. you will get a list, and you will like it!
“let’s get it on”, marvin gaye
freakin’ al green. anything by al green.
“everybody here wants you”, jeff buckley
do i even need to mention prince here? i didn't think so.
best dance song:
any hip hop song
most 80’s pop tunes
most 70’s disco tunes
song that makes you cry:
”who i am”, jessica andrews: “… and when the day is done, my momma's still my biggest fan.” yeah, she is. :)
“three little birds”, bob marley
“famous blue raincoat”, tori amos
“me and a gun”, tori amos
song that reminds you of your OTP:
”collide”, howie day: “i'm quiet, you know / you make a first impression / i've found i'm scared to know / i'm always on your mind”
weird song:
”rocky raccoon”, the beatles: “her name was magill, and she called herself lil, but everyone knew her as nancy.” c’mon. (this is, not coincidentally, one of my favorite lyrics. my dad used to sing this song to me...)
song you wish you'd never heard:
i can’t really think of one…
song that reminds you of your country (original, please. no national anthems :P):
”america”, simon and garfunkle: “cathy, i said as we boarded a greyhound in pittsburgh / michigan seems like a dream to me now”
song that you listen to when you're writing:
i changed this question a bit, because the stuff i listen to isn’t dependent on whether i’m writing angst/smut/whatever, it’s dependent on what i want to get out of the story as a whole and the state of mind i want to be in while writing.
so, i give you another list:
pretty hate machine album, nine inch nails
the entire tori amos oeuvre (including “cool on your island” from y kant tori read days)
“last goodbye”, jeff buckley
“wicked game”, chris issak
the smiths – mostly stuff from “the queen is dead”
“galileo”, indigo girls
“romeo and juliet”, indigo girls
"both hands", ani difranco
dilate album, ani difranco
song that you can listen to for hours on end:
”last goodbye”, jeff buckley: the opening base line is a thing of wonder every time i hear it.
“tear in your hand,” tori amos: "maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen." she always is.
“romeo and juliet”, indigo girls
(pretty much anything on my writing list, i’d think. i usually listen to those songs OVER AND OVER until the damn story’s purged from my brain).
artist/band you listen to which you think not many people know about:
um, not many people know of my deep love for country music. crystal gayle, willie nelson, patsy cline, george jones, george strait, merle haggard, waylon jennings, freddy fender, dolly parton… i grew up with these guys. (along with the beatles and the entire motown songbook, of course).
also, the monkees. i heart the monkees.
my parents didn’t listen to zeppelin like everyone else’s parents.
song you want to lose your virginity to:
there was no soundtrack, and thank god.
best songs of all time:
wow. hmm. i don’t know if we have time for this list.
a sampling, if you will:
“ticket to ride”, the beatles: one of the best opening guitar riffs ever, in my limited musical opinion.
the medley on abbey road: probably one of the best things ever.
“grace”, jeff buckley: so much joy in this song. i hope he smiled as much in making it as i do listening to it.
“tear in your hand”, tori amos: “i don’t believe you’re leavin’, cause me and charles manson like the same ice cream.” good as any reason i can come up with, tori.
also “kashmir”? much better song than “stairway to heaven”, imho.
“castles made of sand”, jimi hendrix
“fire”, jimi hendrix
"beat on the brat", the ramones
and i left off the songs i really love, but which aren't all that musically great, like "detachable penis" which cracks me up every time i hear it, or "88 lines about 44 women" which is just a brilliant little song. "only a lad" by oingo boingo, which is just "maxwell's silver hammer" for a new generation. "punk rock girl" ("if you don't got mojo nixon, then your store could use some fixiiiiiiin!"), and "euro trash girl". lots of stuff.
eta: you know, the funniest freakin song EVAR: "the rain", oran juice jones. ("you without me is like corn flakes without the milk!")
music rules.
i always forget how much i love music until i start something like this. :)
