new york: the saga continues

so after crashing on saturday night, woke up at noon on sunday and headed out.
there was something going on with the fire station directly across from the world trade center and it involved numerous motorbikes. they completely filled the streets. no triumphs or vincent black shadows that i could see... most everyone had a harley of some sort or an indian. anyway, good stuff.
after i made it through the throng of bikes, i hopped the train to radio city and the poa premiere.
since the towers are no longer there, it's always hard for me to tell which way i'm headed after i get out of the subway station. no problems today, as i only needed to follow the sound of the screaming fangirls. when i rounded the corner at 51st and 5th, i could see the crowd (not very big for it being 2p, i thought) and the camera crane. as i got closer, i could see that they'd had things pretty much set up: red carpet, press section and then fangirls on the other side of the street (for those of you who've not been to new york, 51st is not that wide of a street, so you could still see things pretty clearly).
just a few setup items:
first: it was not terribly hot, but it was incredibly humid for this california girl. by the time 4p rolled around, it was pretty hard to breathe around there.
second: i cased the joint and figured out where the limos were going to drop folks off, where they were going to walk, and where they were going to enter the building. not very hard to figure.. took all of 5 mins. i decided to plant myself closer to the door, because i figured i'd get to see folks as the ended the press gauntlet. (even though i didn't have a GREAT view, it was certainly the most entertaining spot.. more on that in a minute).
third: it was probably the smallest crowd i'd ever seen for a premiere. granted, after i found my spot at ~2.30p, i didn't really move from it, so there could have possibly been more folks at the ends. but to give you some perspective, the last premiere i went to was in westwood village. when they do that, they generally shut down most of the village to traffic for all the limos, press and folk crowding around. we got their early and barely got a spot close enough to see the red carpet. this, in comparison, was an awesome experience.
fourth: things were so loud, you could not hear anything anyone was saying to the press. it was more of a looking thing than a hearing thing, really. so, i am still relatively unspoiled for the flick (with the exception, of course, of all the stills i've seen up to now). am staying away from all the wonderful recaps folks have given of their time inside the theatre until after i see the flick. i'm not sure why i decided this, but there it is. :)
the highlights:
- rupert grint looks like a freakin' rock star. it almost made me forget how old i am. and will be in a matter of months. rupert brought a kid with him who was either a) his brother b) his date or c) julian casablancas from the strokes. the 13 year old girls next to me didn't know, either. :P
- dan is quite tall for his age, i thought.
- tom felton likes to be different. he was the only one (that i saw) to get dropped off somewhere off 6th instead of coming to the front of the red carpet (which was closer to 5th). he and dan kinda hit 51st at the same time from opposite ends. the fangirls went wild. tom then walked down the street towards the beginning of the press gauntlet to make his walk.
- i noted that it took dan over an hour to make it down the press gauntlet to the door.
- i saw emma for like 2 seconds and she looked quite pretty. :)
- alan rickman's hair was sort of orange. it was strange, but he looked quite dapper regardless of hair.
- i loved that there were NO FANGIRLS SCREAMING for rob thomas. it was funny. in fact, the kids where i was at didn't even mention that he was on the carpet. (these same girls chanted for ALFONSO, so.)
- every WB teen actor was present for their publicity shot.
notables:
- overheard conversation:
daughter: [from dad's shoulders, to get better view of dan] are you okay, dad?!
dad: sure, i'm fine, i'm only your father.
- one of the photographers across the way made sure a girl who'd been waiting since the early morning got rupert's autograph. the female photographer pointed her out to the security and pleaded her case. i thought it was sweet.
- another photographer made sure the group of fangirls around me got a present to rupert: a pair of red lace thong knickers. (they attempted to throw them, but their aim was not so good). those photographers are doing god's work, folks. ;)
- i think when dan heard about the knickers, he decided not to break the security line. wise choice, as i am sure every girl 15 and under would have broken the barracades at that point.
it was all over by 4.30p. no tickets passed out for the folks waiting outside, although the stuff around was pretty much up for grabs. i got to watch nypd settle a dispute between two 13 year old girls over one of the banners hung on the barracades. they were playing tug-o-war with it. he was really trying not to laugh, i could tell.
for some reason that i can't explain, it took me two hours to get back to the hotel. it then took me another two hours to venture outside the hotel for food. i really don't know where the time goes.
i stopped at an all night chinese food place and was so hungry i ordered two dishes. the lady at the counter thought it was for two people and tried to give me two sets of utensils. ha!
monday was pretty uneventful. went to strand annex, bought no books. went to this discount mall thing across from the trade center and am stabbing myself with a fork for not buying the new piece of luggage i had in my hand because i could really use another suitcase right now.
i then changed my ticket, called boss, and changed it back. got them to only charge me once for it, too. (thank you, billie rae, for teaching me those phat phone skillz.) am really glad i don't have to go to that thing, but sad that i don't get more time in new york, since i didn't get to do half of things i wanted to do.
i'm sure i'll be back. ;)
and, of course, the chronicles of enkeli in london are still in progress. stay tuned! :)
