okay, so while all of you have been over on sci fi watching the new battlestar galactica, i've been quietly watching math porn numb3rs over on cbs.
in my not-so-humble opinion? y'all are missin' out.
first, a little something you may not know about me: i love to hear people talk about math, esp math majors. they get so excited and i think that's cool. i dated one once and ... yeah. (it didn't hurt that he was cute and had a nice voice, *g*). so, omg you don't even know how much i'm in love with david krumholtz's crazy math genius character. he's so adorkable and math-obsessed and <33333333!
also? math is k00l. (yeah, it is. no really. i'm serious!)
and THEN you get rob morrow, FBI AGENT! let's just put aside the little crush i have on rob morrow for a moment. FBI AGENT! solving crimes with a TIE and sunglasses and HANDCUFFS.
and then there's always-awesome peter macnichol as the crazy math genius mentor dude (OMGBBQ!!111!!). it's like i wait for the part of the show when we get to go see him and he says things like "here, sit down and join our string theory discussion lunch group!" i would so be the girl with a copy of godel, escher, bach one table over, eavesdropping.
it's like, the writers camped out in my brain for a week to glean all of my tv show hot buttons and then MADE IT FOR THE TV! the only thing that would make this even more fantastic is if they found mathematical cyphers in, like, shakespeare or e.e. cummings or something. i think i would make a serious attempt to snog my television at that point.
so, why aren't you watchin', huh? i know you all have tivo! *eyebrow*
also, when did friday 10pm become such a popular time slot? i just realised that i couldn't record bsg even if i wanted to; i'd miss numb3rs and monk!! dude, you can't mess with my friday night crazy obsessed detective type tv watching night!

Date: 2005-02-14 11:41 pm (UTC)It's still airing in Japan so we hang on the various discussion lists awaiting the release of the new fansubbed episodes, although now there are real DVDs of maybe episodes 1-4 and 5-8 out here. in real life they are up to episode 21. supposedly will be on Adult Swim in lame-o dubbed version in the summer.
current group we get this from is Anime Forever
who have taken down the first episodes now they are out on DVD, but if you're really nice to me i could send some :)
Also for a while got totally addicted to FullMetal Alchemist which is also on adult swim in super dumb dubbed mode.

Date: 2005-02-15 01:51 am (UTC)i dunno. i don't speak japanese, so the dubbed version is fine with me... it's not like it used to be where the dubbed dialogue was different from the subtitles. for whatever reason i don't mind it with anime, but i'd be pissed if i saw like amelie dubbed.
sending some might be k00l. although, i can wait for adult swim, if it's going to be soon...?
Also for a while got totally addicted to FullMetal Alchemist
OMG I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THIS!!!

Date: 2005-02-15 10:50 pm (UTC)are you watching full metal alchemist on adult swim? what are they up to? I caught it the other day while doing laundry and it was the campy "when i am furher, all female officers will wear miniskirts!" episode :) kind of a ways to go..
no subject
Date: 2005-02-16 07:46 pm (UTC)and yeah, watching on adult swim. i'm not sure what they're up to... the last ep i watched was the one where ed passes his exam. i've got a ton of eps recorded on my dvr, i've just not had the chance to watch them!

Date: 2005-02-14 07:49 pm (UTC)a little confession...
Date: 2005-02-14 02:31 pm (UTC)It wasn't till I was in a Cisco Networking class where we discussing hexadecimal numbers and base ten and the IP numbering schemes that my brain clicked and I realized how capable and fairly well equipped it was for math.
I was somehow more turned on by math and saw it even more all around me... connecting dots in non-math things that have math hidden inside... and omg...
but get this... I never really understood where I got the math bits of my brain, when my brother shares with me that our Dad, when he was in the Navy, was the guy who the gun turret dudes gave measurements on where the target was to be shot at, at which point my Dad would do all these calculations and other math before giving the shooter of the big gun the final coordinates.... my brain nearly stopped dead at this point because I thought HOLY FUCK my Dad was doing Calculus and Trig on the fly in WWII
My brother had a similar reaction.
But ok, that was a ramble. But needless to say things have never been the same since.
*programs numb3rs into TiFaux*
Re: a little confession...
Date: 2005-02-14 07:50 pm (UTC)i used to enjoy (yes, enjoy!) doing hex numbers for rgb BY HAND until i just memorised the hex for certain colors. my trig teacher was
ev0lawesome in that he made us learn logs by hand.i used to also have all the IP numbering schemes memorised. i took a class for computer desk help in college (computer lab desk jockey was my second job) and for some reason they thought we should know this.
connecting dots in non-math things that have math hidden inside...
right! this is where i tell the math dudes that they're really lit scholars, and their language is math. some of them want to choke me when i say this. :)

Date: 2005-02-14 08:23 pm (UTC)I think I might have seen it this past week now that I think... was there a REALLY cut guy... and it was about a building not being totally safe and this kid committed suicide but the cute guy thought it was murder? I recall watching something like that after JAG came on and thinking "that man sure is PRETTY".. and loving the banter with him and his ex and ohhh the dad had a really bad date or something... and the plotline was roveting... I had to keep watching cause I wanted to know what happened :P

Oh, you are so right about this. So this is my choice: two adorable Jewish boys from Pasadena geeking out over various crimes, or Edward James Olmos' patented (and very tired) slow burn? Um, yeah -- no contest there. Also, I hate Mary McConnell, and the thought of Olmos, the world's biggest cholo, playing Brit Jamie Bamber's dad is totally ridiculous as well as being unintentionally hilarious.
Yes, I'd much rather watch Morrow, Krumholz and TV dad Judd Hirsch kvetch at each other in their fabulously appointed Craftsman house. Absolutely.

Date: 2005-02-14 09:54 pm (UTC)dude, you just summed up my entire reason for loving this show in 11 words.
geeky jewish boys? *crazy mad love*
and in pasadena!? *aship;fheo@p'fhoie*
I Could not watch that show because...
Date: 2005-02-15 05:36 pm (UTC)It sounds frighteningly like my job. Using maths to solve crimes and all....
Re: I Could not watch that show because...
Date: 2005-02-15 09:42 pm (UTC)omg that is so cool. but then i knew you were cool and superhero-like already. :)
